Hacking Ancient Wisdom To Improve Internal Health

The Power Within

Each of us has a potential to enjoy life with a calm disposition and steady energy. For centuries, methods of physical and spiritual practice have been successfully practiced. These arts were taught long ago in confidence to the initiated. Only recently have these methods been revealed by the Internet’s looking glass to all who want to learn.

I’m a medical doctor and the truth is that what people do for themselves on a daily basis has far greater power to maintain health and prevent illness than any magic I can conjure. Exercise, good diet and stress management are the keys to a long and enjoyable life.

Exercise to Invigorate the Body

Exercise is a subtle art that at its best involves every part of the body in a healing and invigorating way. Yoga and Tai Chi are ancient arts that promote these goals. Exercising in an effective way keeps the spine and the body's structures mobile. Core Mobility allows each breath to promote circulation within the internal organs, circulation of blood through the body and circulation of spinal fluid to the brain. Breath-by-breath health is maintained.

Mindful Eating

The body needs to be fed enough but not too much. Experiments have shown that avoiding consuming more calories than we really need leads to longer life. It is important to drink enough water to run the engines of life. Eating should be mindful and filled with the knowledge that the food being consumed is a life giving miracle. The food we eat should be fresh and offer a nutritionally complete experience. Ancient healing traditions all suggest a reverential attitude towards the four that sustains us.

Keep Stress In Check

Stress is omnipresent and will overwhelm without an effort to maintain an internal sense of calm. We have little control over the world outside of ourselves and have ability only to move toward an inner sense of personal satisfaction and harmony. No one emerges from childhood feeling harmonious. It must be cultivated by slowly moving towards a peaceful place on the horizon. Taking some time each day to practice a simple breathing meditation is effective and has been practiced by our species for thousands of years.

Quantify and Improve

The discovery that a single health metric is able to objectively follow health benefits of exercise, diet and stress management is a major medical scientific achievement. Aortic Stiffness, a measure of stiffness along the spinal axis is a proven predictor for risk of death from all causes. Aortic Stiffness is a way to assess Core Mobility and can now be assessed using a 30 second test, a fingertip pulse sensor and a mobile app.
